Life doesn’t get much better than day #1 of a vacation or a long holiday weekend. I dream of it and I plan for it. I order new books on my kindle and I buy the proper attire if necessary. I make sure the battery in my camera is all juiced up knowing that I will want to remember the moments that are waiting for me. I linger over recipes and I google the newest restaurants. Two weeks prior to the anticipated time-off-of-life, I create a playlist on my iphone so that the entire experience will be enhanced with background music playing through my wireless speaker.
Vacations rarely disappoint. It doesn’t matter where we are or if the weather cooperates. They provide space where we can leave our cares behind and forget about all of life’s responsibilities. We can stick our nose in a book or take a 2 hour nap without an ounce of guilt. Not only do we get to plan all of the things that we -never- get-to- do during the work week – but our plans include sharing the days with some of our favorite people in the whole wide world.
Thus – I am feeling on top of the world as I write this post. As far as I am concerned, the 4th of July weekend begins on July 1…let the games begin.
Whenever we start something new it fills us with hope and anticipation. Starting something new is often much bigger than day #1 of your holiday weekend. You might start a new job, a diet, or an exercise program. You might become engaged, get married, or date someone new. Whether it is becoming pregnant or having a baby, buying a house or moving, starting a new school or changing a career.. life changing events can also be met with a bit of fear and trepidation. But the hope of something better overshadows the wondering about what challenges you may face.
New things in our life are not always of our own choosing. Life has a way of handing us some experiences which come suddenly and without our approval. But even amidst our difficulties, the Lord creates something new that helps to get us through. He promises that no matter what occurs in our life, we will still be able to live out our days with joy and satisfaction. He specializes in new dreams, new beginnings, new directions, and second chances.
“See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland.”
Eternal life begins here and now. It begins as we invite Jesus to join us as we begin something new. It begins as we invite Him into our marriages, our weekend fun, our work day, and into our homes. It begins as we seek His guidance and look to Him for endurance during the difficult times. It begins as we open His word and learn of His mysteries. It begins as we learn to trust Him for a brand new plan. It begins as we grow to recognize His voice as He whispers to our soul.
I don’t know about you, but I am all geared up for the holiday weekend. My calendar is scheduled with all kinds of fun activities and it includes some space to sprawl out in my zero gravity chair. The goal is that by the end of the weekend I will not only have logged some fun memories; I will be refreshed.
There is nothing better than the refreshment that comes from a life spent with Jesus. Invite Him to join in your life. He will fill you up and spill into your heart, your mind, and your everyday living…
…and you will be refreshed.
“On the final and climactic day of the Feast, Jesus took his stand. He cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Rivers of living water will brim and spill out of the depths of anyone who believes in me this way, just as the Scripture says.” – John 7:37-38
